(Example)
Hosting a young people’s conference is an experience that every new person walking through the doors of AA should experience. The experience gained through hard work, patience and selflessness, is more than likely brand new to most of us. As alcoholics, many have never belonged, because we didn’t join, have never felt a part of, because we didn’t pitch in, and have never shared in the joy of teamwork, because we wanted all of the recognition for ourselves.
Participating on a conference committee gives each person another place to practice the 12 steps, principles, and traditions, as well as feel like they belong. It’s also a wonderful place to learn from others who are actively working the steps in their lives.
Recently, Lafayette has soon many new young faces in the rooms of AA. The enthusiasm of this bid has sparked so many newly sober alcoholics, in our area, into suiting up, showing up, and lending a sober helping hand. This conference is not a necessity for keeping the young people in Lafayette sober, because there are the steps, principles, and traditions. It does, however, help to show young people that you can enjoy life sober, and that life has not ended upon picking up the desire chip. This is sometimes hard to remember when you’re trying to stay away from the first drink, and the moments of hope seem few and far between and often fleeting.
So, in conclusion, we say this, the ability to host this conference is an honor that, in time, every major city gets a chance to have. If the conference does come to Lafayette, then the gift we’ll be receiving will be amazing.
